After more than 70 years as a dedicated single father, Popeye officially finalized the adoption of his beloved son Swee'pea in a special ceremony hosted by the National Council For Adoption at its annual "Kids at Heart" event held on Nov. 21 in New York City.
Even though Popeye referred to Swee'pea as his "adoptid infink," he was never granted official custody—until now! Judge Greg Mathis, of TV's "Judge Mathis" show, presided over the adoption ceremony. Actress Dana Delany, actor Luis Guzman and hundreds of local New York City children and their new adoptive parents also witnessed this special celebration.
Thomas Atwood, President and CEO of the National Council For Adoption stated, "It is fitting that as an American icon, Popeye would celebrate the wonderful institution of adoption with us. The love shared between Popeye and Swee'pea mirrors the special bonds between the many tens of thousands of children and parents brought together through adoption each year."
